Although River North is located South of Chicago Avenue and West of the Magnificent Mile, River North is properly named because it is located North of the Chicago River. Kinzie Street Bridge, where the Chicago Flood of 1992 began, lines the southwest corner of River North. River North is home to many young professionals. Business men and women flock to the neighborhood due to its chic lifestyle and proximity to the Loop.
At one time River North was an industrial area that developed into a warehouse district. However, when that time was over the area became a playground for young artists. These artists lived in converted warehouses that became lofts. The artists definitely left their imprint on the neighborhood. River North’s history is reflected even today. The area is known for its vast concentration of art galleries. River North is also home to trendy nightclubs, upscale shopping, and cultural restaurants. Be sure to keep an eye out for a familiar face, because with all this neighborhood has to offer, it is quite possible to see a celebrity. River North is home to the popular fitness center East Bank Club. Even though the neighborhood seems to create a glamorous lifestyle for the young individual, children can also enjoy the luxuries of River North. With featured restaurants such as Ed Debevic’s, the Rainforest Café, Rock and Roll McDonald’s, and the Hardrock Cafe, children never become bored. Aside from the fabulous places to dine, River North is home to the infamous Merchandise Mart, what used to be the largest building in the world. The Merchandise Mart is a very well known furniture and fashion shopping center in the heart of River North. Additionally, Montgomery Ward ran his warehouse in River North, however, both his warehouse and his office are now gorgeous condominiums.
There are many places to live in River North. River North has a wide variety of town homes, modern mid rises, and high rises. However, the area is specifically known for its upscale lofts that were once warehouses. The many multi-million dollar single family homes in this area draw attention from numerous Chicagoans.
