West Lakeview is part of a larger neighborhood of Chicago known as Lakeview. However, West Lakeview is known to many as a family friendly area, complete with affordable real estate. West Lakeview stretches from Diversey Parkway on the south to Belmont Avenue to the North. California and the Kennedy expressway line the western part of the area, and Ashland Avenue is its furthest street to the East. West Lakeview resides next to Roscoe Village.
West Lakeview, like many other Chicago land destinations, has much to offer to residents and visitors alike. Hamlin Park is a tree lined park residing in West Lakeview. This park provides residents with tennis courts, basketball courts, a seasonal swimming pool, and many other activities. West Lakeview is also known for Antiques Row. Antiques Row is famous because it is the area in all of the Midwest that contains the highest concentration of antique stores. The antiques vary greatly with the different stores, there is no doubt there will something for every antique lover. West Lake view is also home to many notable theaters. The well known, non-profit Viaduct Theater is found in West Lakeview. Housed in an old warehouse, the Viaduct Theater is a neighborhood treasure. It has live theater, musical performances, and independent film screenings that take place. In addition, another historical theater is the Music Box Theatre. This venue calls itself, “Chicago’s Year Round Film Festival.”
Although shopping is not as big in West Lakeview as in other parts of the city, restaurants and bars are abundant just like anywhere else. The area is known for a unique mix of dining atmospheres. Bars are also gaining popularity in West Lakeview. For example, the Hungary Brain is a local bar with a twist. Bar 134 is also popular to the area, being named after Chicago’s electricians Union IBEW134. West Lakeview is not necessarily the place to skip from coffee house to coffee house; however, for those who need the java Starbuck’s is there to serve its purpose.
Real estate in West Lakeview is typically affordable. The lifestyle is not so busy; it seeks to maintain the serenity of a true neighborhood. There are many single family homes in this area, as well as two and three flat condominiums. The area is a mix of old and new construction. While the neighborhood has many vintage housing options, contemporary lofts and condos are viable options in West Lakeview as well.
Transportation is different in West Lakeview, however, not impossible. There are no CTA stops in West Lakeview but access to the CTA is simple. The Belmont Bus runs through West Lakeview and therefore, residents have access to the Blue Line Belmont Stop, or the Purple, Red, and Brown Belmont Stop.
