Captain George Streeter in the late 1880’s claimed his boat struck a sandbar just off the city’s shoreline during a storm. After the Lincoln Park Board landfilled the area with plans to build Lake Shore Drive, Streeter claimed that this new 186 acres was his. Needless to say that while the feisty captain did not retain rights to the land, the area, among Chicago’s most prestigious neighborhoods, still carries his name.
While there is some debate over what Streeterville’s boundaries are, loosely, the neighborhood is the Magnificent Mile, bordered by the Chicago River to the south, and Lake Michigan to the east. What’s not debatable is the level of first-class shopping, education, health care, and arts that call this corner of the city home. Its luxury hot spots and fabulous hotels are the perfect asset to this locale.
A backdrop to hundreds of films, and top on the list of tourists and locals, alike, many of Chicago’s most sought after attractions are Streeterville’s gems. They include places like 900 N. Michigan Avenue, Water Tower Place, the Museum of Contemporary Art, John Hancock Building, Tribune Tower, and the famed Oak Street Beach.
In addition, the lakefront’s Navy Pier has become a family mecca in the heart of downtown for the place to be to take in all Chicago has to offer. Boat rides, theater, shows, dining, shopping, a world-famed Ferris wheel and kid-friendly attractions have made this mile-plus long peninsula on the lake a perfect attraction to the Streeterville backyard.
Universities such as University of Chicago and Loyola have strong presences here, and Northwestern has created a medical campus like few others, including its recent addition, Prentice Women’s Hospital. The Children’s Memorial Hospital and Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago are also right around the corner.
Streeterville has every form of transportation to make getting around a breeze, but literally anywhere you live puts you within moments by foot to anywhere you want to be. The selection of contemporary high-rises, vintage buildings, mid-rise or co-op condominiums.
