Neighborhood Guide
A quaint neighborhood on Chicago’s North Side and a pocket neighborhood of Edgewater, Andersonville has a strong and historic connection to the city’s Swedish community, while offering a friendly small business district along Clark Street. Its mix of single family homes and small multi-unit buildings gives a distinctive vibe to an area with easy access to downtown.
Home to the Swedish-American Museum, the early roots of the neighborhood are still on display and evident in its Swedish-flag-bearing water tower, and in a variety of Swedish businesses like Simon’s Tavern (a former basement speakeasy during prohibition).
The neighborhood’s historic architecture is protected with a landmark district along Clark Street covering the commercial district between the 4900 and 5800 blocks, and its fine residential architecture in the Lakewood Balmoral Historic District.
Because of the neighborhood’s proximity to Uptown, many popular entertainment options locally such as the Aragon Ballroom and Riviera Theater, give the neighborhood added flair.
