Neighborhood Guide
One of the hottest neighborhoods in the city, Logan Square is a large area with pocket neighborhoods stretching from the Chicago River to Pulaski Street, and featuring some of the finest dining and nightlife in the entire city. The area takes its name from the landmark square at the intersection of Logan Blvd, Kedzie Blvd. and Milwaukee Ave. and is known most for its wide, landscaped boulevards lined by historic homes.
Though its located toward the northeastern end of the neighborhood, Logan Square itself serves as the focal point and defining feature for the neighborhood. At its center, the Illinois Centennial Monument, is a large marble column topped by an eagle. The Square is surrounded by small businesses and restaurants including Reno, Dunlay’s on the Square, Lula Café, Johnny’s Grill, Webster’s Wine Bar, and the famed Longman & Eagle just a block to the north. The Comfort Station, a small building on Milwaukee Avenue serves as an intimate non-profit arts venue.
The neighborhood also has another dining destination along Armitage, just north of the newly-opened 606 trail and park. Milwaukee Avenue runs through the neighborhood and features some of the greatest nightlife in the city. Bars include the Whistler, brewpub Revolution Brewery, Slipperly Slope, the Radler, the Rocking Horse, Estereo and others. A new development coming to the 2500 block of Milwaukee just south of the Square will bring many new residents as well as a new grocery store to the neighborhood’s center.
Off the boulevards, Logan Square is still among the most well preserved neighborhoods of the city, and many of its blocks retain their original character with the predominant housing type being the stately greystone two-flat, many of which have been converted to large single family residences in recent years.
