Lancaster

The Lancaster trades the usual downtown arrival of traffic and pavement for something more considered: a front door facing the Lakeshore East Park. Set at 201 N Westshore Drive, it was the first condominium tower completed in the New Eastside and helped establish the park-facing pattern that would shape the surrounding development. That early role still gives the building a distinct place in the neighborhood, poised between a carefully planned landscape and the larger architecture of downtown.

Designed by Loewenberg Architects, The Lancaster presents a crisp composition of glass, concrete, and recessed balconies. Floor-to-ceiling curtain wall brings daylight and broad city views into its 207 residences, while the balconies give the exterior a measured sense of depth. A large pergola defines the roofline and frames an outdoor terrace above the city. Shared fitness and gathering spaces complement the building’s residential design without distracting from its close relationship with the landscape.

Outside, formal plantings, curving walkways, open lawn, and water features soften the vertical scale of the neighborhood. The Chicago River, lakefront, Maggie Daley Park, and Millennium Park are all part of the wider setting, placing the building between downtown’s cultural core and its waterfront edges. The Lancaster remains a composed presence within that layered cityscape: modern in expression, restrained in scale, and unusually connected to the park at its front door.
