420 E Waterside Dr | Chicago, IL
At 420 East Waterside Drive, The Regatta rises from the south bank of the Chicago River, where the New Eastside opens toward Lake Michigan and Navy Pier. The 44-story tower arrived at a moment when this former rail yard was taking shape as a new piece of downtown Chicago. Its setting remains one of contrasts: the scale of the skyline against the open water, and the movement of the river against the quieter residential streets surrounding Lakeshore East Park.
Designed by Loewenberg Architects, The Regatta is defined by dual elliptical glass curtain walls that wrap the tower in broad, curving planes. The façade catches the changing blues and grays of the river and lake, giving the building a fluid quality that feels closely tied to its waterfront position. Completed in 2006, the building received a 2008 SARA Award from the Society of American Registered Architects.
The Shore Club amenities extend the building’s connection to its surroundings. An indoor swimming pool offers a year-round retreat, while the rooftop garden brings the skyline and waterfront into view from above. A theater room adds another shared space within the building. Beyond The Regatta, the paths of Lakeshore East Park lead toward the Chicago Riverwalk, lakefront, Navy Pier, and downtown cultural landscape. The result is a tower that belongs distinctly to the New Eastside, with its curved glass architecture reflecting both the ambition of Lakeshore East and the waters that define this part of Chicago.
