Neighborhood Guide
A “pocket neighborhood” within the boundaries of Logan Square, the Palmer Square area is largely identified by the large, historic namesake green space ringed with historic mansions. Palmer Square was once a center of the early cycling community. Its oval shape meant that cyclists could build speed and make wide turns, taking laps of the park space. Bicycle magnate Ignaz Schwinn built his home on the corner of Palmer St. and Humboldt Blvd., now the location of the St. Sylvester School.
The streets surrounding Palmer Square have been attractive in recent years because of their position near the Blue Line L, but also due to their easy walking distance of the dining options on Milwaukee Ave, Armitage Ave., and now, very close to the widely popular 606 trail, a 2.7 mile long former rail bed turned elevated walking/biking path.
At the Square’s center, a Velveteen Rabbit-themed “tot lot” is a draw for the area’s children through the warmer months who play on its sculpted land, use its small slides of meander along shady paths. A trip to the nearby Miko’s Italian Ice on summer days remains a neighborhood tradition.
