A largely industrial area that hugs the riverfront on the North Branch of the Chicago River could soon be transformed under a new framework that was approved this week by the Chicago Plan Commission.
A 3.7 mile area of the river between Kinzie and Fullerton would be changed from industrial to residential, high tech manufacturing and office space under the plan, a total of 760 acres.
A minimum of 10 acres would also be set aside for open space, together with wetland conservation areas and a riverfront trail.
