Chicago had a huge milestone yesterday as officials from the city joined developers CMK Companies and Lendlease to break ground on the South Loop project known as Riverline.
One of the largest projects to come to the city's core in recent years, it will eventually bring 3,600 new residences to eight buildings fronting the South Branch of the Chicago River between Bertrand Goldberg's River City and Roosevelt Road on the north.

The booming South Loop will soon have a new retail mall developed amongst the high-rise residential buildings.
The developers behind the new, five-story retail complex at 909 S. Jefferson St. just received their first permits to begin construction. They'll have over 100,000 square feet of commercial space together with two levels of underground parking. It could be open as early as Spring 2017.

Developers CMK Companies and Lendlease will be executing a master plan for the phased construction of five mixed-use highrise buildings along the east bank of the Chicago River between Harrison and Roosevelt. It would bring about 3,600 new residences to the area on 14 acres of land.

A tower, that would be the South Loop's tallest, cleared the Chicago Plan Commission yesterday, bringing it one step closer to construction.
Designed by Helmut Jahn, the 73-story tower proposed for 1000 S. Michigan would feature 506 total units split between rental apartments and condominiums, the latter on the higher floors.
The building will also have 486 parking spaces, a 13,000 square foot green roof and 2,700 square feet of ground floor retail space...
It looks like another tower is coming to the hot South Loop area.
According to reports in two local websites, developers are planning a new, 33-story, 496-unit apartment building for the vacant lot at 801 S. Financial, just south of Polk Street and next to the Metra tracks.
An Atlanta-based developer purchased the site in December for $15.5 million. Chicago's Pappageorge Haymes are the architects.
The site is awaiting construction permits to begin...
