Neighborhood Guide
Once you travel out of Chicago, it is nearly impossible to run into to someone who has visited the city, and not had a sensational experience to share from the Gold Coast. Undoubtedly one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the country, it is also one of the most legendary corners of America for its steakhouses, nightclubs, shopping, scenery, and people-watching to your delight.
Chicago’s Gold Coast in the late 1980’s was the second most-affluent neighborhoods in the country, behind New York Manhattan’s Upper East Side. It has been historically the neighborhood of the richest and most famous who have made Chicago home, as well as private executives and professionals living the dream of lavish everything. The neighborhood still ranks among the richest urban communities to live in.
The Gold Coast begins from the south at Oak Street, extends to the east to the lakefront, west to Clark Street, and south to North Avenue. Neoclassic row houses, townhouses, single-family residences and in-town to expansive condos offer a wide range of living options for those seeking to make the Gold Coast home.
Tremendous architecture, garden walks which promote beautification throughout, and art fairs for collector or the browser, are all just part of the neighborhood’s cache. Also part of its appeal is its walking distance to everything. Minutes away from the Magnificent Mile, a walk through an underground tunnel to the lakefront, and the best of everything within a few side streets is really what makes the Gold Coast special.
The Chicago Transit Authority Red Line runs nearby as do bus lines throughout, with special bus routes through the Gold Coast during rush hour.
